  The thoughts that I first had when i started reading the book was that I was expecting it to be a boring book.I did not really expect it to be a decent book. When I was reading the first few pages I was really confused as to why he had a blue stone in his pocket.After getting into the book and learning about his mama giving him the stone, the first few pages started to make sense.When I was reading the first few pages it was talking about a boy in the army. I really hate it when book do that because you really dont know whats going on until later in the book. Another one of the first impressions that I had in the book was it was kind of confusing because it would talk about all these things that the people would talk about, for an example wadeng.I can honestly say that I have never heard that word before.They said that it was a word for the reason why they need an education. Maybe the word means to have a successful education. Since I have read parts of the book the prologue ruins the book a slight bit. The reason why it does is because the prologue talks about Jacob at the age if 12. Which means that he survived his walk in the Sudan. And that he also got his wish to be a soldier in the army. Since the war has started he never got to see his mother again yet. In the prologue it also says that Mojok also survived the walk, and same with Oscar.
