Character Growth

While reading the book "A Hare in the Elephant’s Trunk" we follow the journey of a young boy named Jacob from southern Sudan. Throughout Jacob's journey we watch him grow from the first time we meet him in the book and as we continue reading his about his journey. Jacob at the start of the book is different than the Jacob we see 100 pages later. The Jacob we see at the start is a young boy who has big dreams such as becoming the best wrestler in Sudan and raising his own herd of cattle. The Jacob we see over 100 pages later is still the same young boy with big dreams but now he is worrying about survival and his country that has fallen into war. As the book progresses we watch how Jacob grows and develops from being the young boy under the protection of his mother and village to now having to build his own shelter, find and grow his own food, taking care of his new young friend. Jacob is having to grow up a lot faster then he would have had to normally because of the circumstance he is in right now. The journey he is on to Ethiopia, walking for more than 60 days straight is something most people could never imagine and neither could Jacob before his journey. The biggest areas I have noticed Jacob developing in are his mind and his body. Jacob’s mind has developed more because he is now having to use it for survival. He is more aware of his surrounding as he has to look for food, water, shelter, and dangerous animals. Jacob before never had to worry about this before because he ha a whole village who worked together. Physically Jacob has grown through his long walk to Ethiopia as he has had to fight through the tiredness and the pain and I feel his endurance has grown as well. These are the biggest areas i have noticed how Jacob has developed and where he has developed growing up under these circumstances.
