(SPOILERS)
(Only if you haven't read past page 240)
The book “ A Hare In The Elephant’s Trunk” is a great example of knowledge is power, we see this when Jacob is trying to make money for school by trading some of his items. On page 236 Jacob is trying to make a deal with a man named Joseph. Jacob is trying to trade some of the clothing he has got from the Kakuma Refugee Camp for cones of tobacco. Trying to get a better deal jacob says “If I tell you that I will teach each of your five children more than two dozen of the most important things in the world, all by sunrise tomorrow, will you agree to trade me five cones of your fine tobacco for the items in my bag?”. This is a great example that Jacob is using the information that he has learned in school to help trade for items that he will sell to help him be able to pay for boarding school. Not only is it allowing him to get a better deal, but he is passing down information to the children which not even their parents could teach. (Jacob taught the five kids the english alphabet)

I think that Jacob is using his knowledge as power. He is not only using his knowledge to trade for items, but is using it to help out teach kids information which they can apply onto their lives later on. There is a lot of violence that goes on through the entire book but when you get further in you can see how much knowledge helps the boys. Knowledge is valued by a lot of the people in Sudan and across Africa so being able to have some helps you get much further along.
I believe that jacob has made the right choice of choosing knowledge over violence and I am excited to see how much more it can help him.MP
Jacob clearly learned something while he was attending school. Jacob knows what it feels like to learn, he knows how much other kids want to learn. This makes it easier for him to understand what others want for what he needs. He is using knowledge as power.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog FinalMagician I agree completely that knowledge is power and that Jacob is wielding his knowledge correctly. Jacob is a very intelligent young man and uses his knowledge well from becoming a translator to leading Willy. Jacob also knows how to use his knowledge to avoid war as he knows war is wrong. I think that's another huge part of Jacob's knowledge is that he knows how to wield it in a way that he can avoid war. I think that's something else you may want to have built upon is how he uses his knowledge and intelligence to negotiate his way out of violent war-like situations and give examples of this.
ReplyDeleteI fully agree with what you're saying in the original bog and in the comments. Without the knowledge that Jacob has required over the years from being on his own and in school has not only benefited himself, but all the children he has taught. While trying to complete his one huge goal in life Jacob has not only used his intelligence for himself, but for those who weren't as lucky to learn as he was. Everything that Jacob does is something that he has to think about and consider the consequences. With Jacob's intelligence he has saved not only his own life, but his friends to. With Jacob's goals in life and who he wants to be we know that Jacob will live everyday to his fullest and try to be the person his mama would be proud of.
