Jacob's Undying Hope

Jacob's Undying Hope

Jacob has had all he knows taken from him in just a few hours. He lost his family, friends, and village. He knows that walking to Ethiopia will be a very long, tiring walk but he hopes that once he gets there he will see his family again. He doesn't really think of the chances of them not being there or not being alive at all. Jacob keeps his hopes positive instead of just giving up. All throughout the journey to Ethiopia Jacob is always touching his mama rock in hope she will hear him. Jacob meets a young boy, Willy, on his journey and lets him borrow his mama stone (pg.50) for a while so Willy may let his mama know he's thinking of her. In this tragedy Jacob is thinking of others and is still positive. After they keep walking they meet up with Oscar and Majok, along with about 100 other boys all heading for Ethiopia. I can't imagine the happiness those boys felt. Being able to see the people they care about after all they've been through. Seeing Oscar and all these boys probably gave Jacob even more hope that he would see his family. His hope is still so high and undying. Monyroor and Jacob join the line of boys. When they realize that they have walked in a circle  when they come back to Willy's village Jacob's hope doesn't waver. As the many boys keep walking lots die off and give up hope. Jacob and his friends never give up and are most delighted when they hear the rushing of the Gilo River. When they get to the river the boys are faced with a huge obstacle to get across. Willy can't swim and Oscar has a broken arm. The boys still don't give up they work together to get across the river. No matter what happens to these boys they never give up hope. They just keep pushing with undying hope.

  1. I think is it very much true. Jacob is a very strong and hopeful boy, who has a strong belief. He is constantly thinking of his mother giving him more hope that he will see her again. When he meets Oscar and Majok, He has a even stronger belief that people in his family are still alive like his Uncle Daniel who lived in the same village as Oscar and Mojak. This all shows that Jacob is a very strong, brave, and strong willed boy as you demonstrated above, he wouldn't give up no matter what was thrown at him because he had the will and reason to move forward.

  2. I agree, although we see many of these boys give up it seams Oscar, Jacob, Willy and Monyroor are the strongest group in 1000's of boys. It seams like nothing can break them and they are the strongest together. It is just my hope that things don't fall apart, there are still 200 pages left and a lot can happen in 200 pages!!
