After reading a little further into the book I have realized that the theme of this book is about survival and family. In my opinion the only reason that Jacob is still pushing ahead is because he feels that his mom is still out there looking for him. He carries his heart shaped rock that his mom gave to him at the village before it got raided. (page 7 “Mama turned her hand over and Jacob pried open her fingers. It was a stone, the same blue as Mama’s dress, and it was shaped almost like a heart.”) This rock helps him remember his mom and reminds Jacob to keep moving forward. On the 78 days of walking Ethiopia Jacob would look at his rock and tell himself that his mom is waiting for him there but when they got to Ethiopia there was no one around but a crocodile. But Jacob tells himself each day that his mom is still out there and he will see her tomorrow.
I agree with this because Jacob mother was a huge part of his life and he is not the same boy with out him. I think Jacob is going to grow stronger without his mother because he has to do everything himself and has to keep his head held high to accomplish his goals
