The Journey of Jacob Deng

In " A Hare In The Elephant's Trunk" by Jan L. Coates we take a journey with Jacob Deng from his life experience from when Jacob is at home with his Mother and sisters and family to when Jacob and Monyroor have to escape the village while under attack by the army of the north. From the pages I have read from 1 to 109 as you listen to Jacob you learn that he wants to be a soldier, he believes he will be a brave soldier, while his mother wants him to go to school and learn which she thinks will make peace in the land. I believe if Jacob wants to be a solder he should go to school so he has some knowledge then be a soldier like he wants to be. When Jacob has to leave his village because of the attack you see that Jacob's family means lots to him and not being with them brings a different side of Jacob we have not seen during the early stages of the book. Monyroor tells Jacob that they are going to Ethiopia because their will be a feast their waiting for them.  When Monyroor said this I felt like soon as both boys get to Ethiopia they will be disappointed and they will let down for what they get when they arrive in Ethiopia. In the book there are many similes comparing the boys to animals. Jacob gets compared to a Hare because of his big feet and his teeth. Also a boy named Majok is a bully and thinks he is better then the other boys because he went to school and he is compared to a snake. From reading the pages I have read from this book I have learned that a bond of hope and staying strong with one another can break you apart and you are also stronger with more people than just yourself. I will be reading about the rest of Jacob’s journey to happiness and hopefully his mother. This is “A Hare In The Elephant's Trunk.

  1. I agree with you that Jacob should go to school. If more people become educated then he could help his country advance in technology and pull out of 3rd world. Being a soldier is also an honorable thing helping to defend your country against enemies.
